Plea filed in Supreme Court to give shelter and food to needy people during lockdown

New Delhi: The case of migration of migrant labourers has reached the top court. A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding directions to local administration/police officers across India to immediately identify stranded migrant labourers and workers and provide them with proper food, water, medicines and medical monitoring. Along with this, the petition has sought refuge in one of the nearby government shelters till the lockdown continues.

The petitioner for the case, Alakh Alok Srivastava, has requested the Central Government to remove the inhuman plight of thousands of migrant labourers families - women, young children, elders and the disabled etc., on foot. In the midst of a coronovirus crisis, these people are forced to walk hundreds of kilometres on foot without food, water, transport, medical or shelter. The Supreme Court is likely to look into the matter on 30 March.

The petition states, "Such a lockdown is very important to control the spread of deadly coronaviruses. The biggest victims of this crisis situation are poor, unregistered migrant labourers, who are rickshaw- There are drivers, garbage lifters, construction workers, factory workers, unskilled and semi-skilled workers, etc. "
