Counting of votes for UP Panchayat elections to be postponed due to corona crisis, petition in SC

New Delhi: The havoc of the crying epidemic continues in every corner of the country. The results of the Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh are due on May 2 amid the crisis. But a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court on Friday seeking a stay on counting of votes.

The Supreme court in the petition has sent notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state election commission. The matter will be heard at 10.30 am on Saturday. The petitioner appealed that panchayat elections have been completed but votes are yet to be counted. With many corona cases coming up during panchayat elections, counting should be stopped in view of the current situation. State that panchayat elections in UP have been completed in four phases, the results of which are due on May 2. Many people on duty during panchayat elections have been hit by corona candidates contesting the elections.

Apart from Uttar Pradesh, a petition was also filed in Maharashtra regarding panchayat elections. The Supreme court has asked the state election commission to assess the situation and submit a report. The State Election Commission has told the court that it is proposed to postpone panchayat elections for two months in view of the situation in Covid.
