Holiest month of the year 2016, Shravan is exposed here along with the dates of the most powerful days. This year auspicious month starts from July 20, 2016 and will continue till August 18, 2016 in North India.

Shravan Month is one of the holiest Hindu months and is dedicated to Lord Shiva in North India. Shravan Month is the fifth month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. A month in these regions is calculated from the day after Purnima or full moon to the next Purnima.

The Mondays in Shravan month is dedicated to worship of Shiva. People make it a point to visit Shiva temples on Sawan Mondays – The Mondays in the month are on July 25, August 1, August 8 and August 15.

The Story behind the holy Month is - According to the legends when the churning of oceans took place in month of Shravan, fourteen different rubbies came out. Thirteen of these were distributed amongst the demons, except Halahal (poison).

Lord Shiva drank the Halahal and stored it in his throat. Hence the name Neelkantha is attribured to Shiva. So, to reduce the effect of poison, Lord Shiva wore the crescent moon on his head.

All the Gods thereafter started offering the Gangasn water to cool Lord Shiva and to diminish the ill effects of poison.

Since, this happened in the month of Shravan, since the Shiva devotees offer the Gangas water in this month.
