NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited to Droupadi Murmu's Delhi home to congratulate her as it was obvious by Thursday evening that she would be elected to the position of President of India. Social media was flooded with messages praising the choice of India's first indigenous woman as president.

As 1.3 billion Indians celebrated Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Prime Minister tweeted, "A daughter of India from a tribal community born in a distant corner of eastern India has been selected our President!"

Union minister Amit  Shah said, the fact that Ms. Murmu overcame adversity to hold the highest post in the land is evidence of the enormous power of our democracy. The selflessness with which she dedicated herself in the service of the nation and society is an inspiration to everybody, even after so many hardships. In a tweet, he stated, "I extend my gratitude to NDA Allies, other political parties, and Independents for supporting tribal pride, Smt. Draupadi Murmu.

The outgoing president Ram Nath Kovind wrote on Twitter:-"Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Smt. Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the 15 th President of India," 

The nation would gain enormously from  Murmu's vast experience in public life, spirit of selfless service, and profound awareness of people's difficulties, said Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, whose term expires in August.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that this was India’s victory and “India gets its first tribal woman President.” Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said he led a procession to celebrate the landslide victory of  Murmu. Bihar Chief Minister also extended his best wishes to Murmu. 

Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy also visited  Murmu’s Home. “A historic moment for the whole country, particularly the tribal society and an occasion showcasing the vibrancy of our democracy,”  Kishan Reddy tweeted. Manoj Sinha, Lt Governor, Jammu & Kashmir said it was a proud moment and historic day for the country.
