PM Modi and President Kovind hail Hima Das creating 'gold' history in World Junior Athletics

PM Modi and President Kovind admired Indian sprinter Hima Das  who created history on Thursday by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships 2018.

President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter to congratulate Das and posted a message, "Congratulations to our sensational sprint star Hima Das for winning the 400m gold in the World Under-20 Championship. This is India’s first ever track gold in a World Championship. A very proud moment for Assam and India, Hima; now the Olympic podium beckons!"

While PM Modi tweeted “India is delighted and proud of athlete Hima Das, who won a historic Gold in the 400m of World U20 Championships. Congratulations to her! This accomplishment will certainly inspire young athletes in the coming years.”

Das has become the first woman to win a gold medal in a World Championship in youth, junior or senior.She has also become the first Indian -- men or women -- to bag gold in a track event at the international level.

Das hails from Dhing village in Assam's Nagaon district. She now joins the memorable group of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who clinch gold in Poland in the last edition in 2016 in a world record effort.Das is also the first Indian track athlete to have clinched a medal in the history of this competition.
