NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to star athlete Neeraj Chopra on Friday to congratulate him for securing a silver medal in the javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics. Although Chopra was widely expected to win the gold, his season-best throw of 89.45 meters in his second attempt earned him a silver medal. During their conversation, PM Modi expressed pride in Chopra’s achievement and acknowledged the challenges he faced due to injuries. Modi praised Chopra's resilience, saying, "You gave your best despite the injuries, and we are all proud of you. This silver medal is a victory for us."

Meanwhile, Neeraj Chopra’s mother, Saroj Devi, shared her overwhelming joy over her son's remarkable performance in the 2024 men's javelin throw final, which took place at the Stade de France on Thursday. Devi expressed immense happiness with the silver medal, noting the difficulties Chopra had to overcome due to his injuries. "For us, silver is as good as gold," she said. She also extended her congratulations to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold medal with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters, becoming the first Pakistani to win an Olympic gold. "The one who got the gold, Arshad Nadeem, is also like our son," Devi added.
