New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE), highlighting India's role in addressing global food and nutrition security. In his address, he underscored the importance of sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices, with a focus on crops like black rice and millets.
Prime Minister Modi pointed out that India's recent budget prioritizes sustainable agriculture, introducing nearly 1900 new climate-resilient crop varieties over the past decade. He emphasized that certain rice varieties in India use 25% less water compared to traditional ones, and noted the rise of black rice as a superfood in states like Manipur, Assam, and Meghalaya.
"Nutrition remains a significant challenge amid water shortages and climate change," Modi stated. "India, as the world's largest producer of millets, offers a solution with what we call Shri Ann. These superfoods, based on the principle of minimum water and maximum production, can address global nutrition concerns. We are ready to share our bounty with the world."
The Prime Minister welcomed delegates from various countries to the conference, being held in India for the first time in 65 years. He expressed pride in India being a food surplus nation and a major producer of milk, spices, and lentils. "India's agricultural diversity makes it a beacon of hope for global food security," he said.
Highlighting India's ancient agricultural traditions, PM Modi mentioned the importance of science and logic in Indian farming practices. He referenced the Ayurvedic science of medicinal foods and the ancient text 'Krishi Parashar,' illustrating India's rich agricultural heritage.
Modi also spoke about India's advancements in digital agriculture. "Through digital technology, we can conduct crop surveys and provide real-time information to farmers, enabling data-driven decisions. Initiatives like the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi have revolutionized how we support our farmers," he added.
The conference, themed "Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems," aims to address global challenges such as climate change, resource degradation, rising production costs, and conflicts. It provides a platform for researchers and professionals to network, present their work, and influence policy-making.
Organized by the International Association of Agricultural Economists, the triennial conference runs from August 2 to 7, 2024, with around 1,000 delegates from 75 countries expected to participate.
