NEW DELHI: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Yair Lapid on becoming the new Prime Minster of Israel and expressed his desire to strengthen their bilateral strategic alliance as they marked 30 years of formal diplomatic ties.

Israel's Parliament decided on Thursday to dissolve itself and hold elections for the seventh time in less than four years in November.

Just after midnight on Friday, Lapid, Israel's foreign minister and the caretaker of the departing coalition government, assumed the position of acting prime minister. He succeeded Israel's shortest-serving prime minister, Naftali Bennett.

Warmest congrats and best wishes to His Excellency @yairlapid on becoming Israel's new prime minister. As we commemorate 30 years of formal diplomatic ties, I look forward to continuing to advance our strategic cooperation," Modi wrote in a tweet.

Thank you for being a genuine friend to India, His Excellency @naftalibennett. I value our helpful exchanges and wish you success in your new position," Modi wrote in multiple tweet.
