New Delhi: After a visit of PM Modi to Northeast, China’s foreign ministry has condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh saying it “resolutely opposes” activities of Indian leaders in the “disputed” region. PM Modi was in Arunachal Pradesh to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore and said his government was placing a lot of importance to improve connectivity in the sensitive border state.

It is to be noted that Beijing urged India to respect its “interests and concerns” and to appreciate the momentum of improving ties between the two countries. It also said that New Delhi should refrain from taking any actions that intensify disputes and complicates the border issue.In response to the Chinese MFA’s statement on PM's visit to Arunachal Pradesh India said that the state of Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and unchallengeable part of India.

The spokesperson said “Indian leaders visit Arunachal Pradesh from time to time, as they visit other parts of India. This consistent position has been conveyed to the Chinese side on several occasions,”. The border dispute between China and India led to the 1962 war and Beijing claims the region as southern Tibet. While India has always rejected the Chinese argument saying that Beijing’s claim on the territory is based on imperial control in the past, the Chinese believe that the Indian claim on the territory is null and void because it was under British imperial control before 1947.

In June 2017, Beijing and New Delhi entered into a military standoff in Doklam after the Chinese brought heavy machinery in the region and started constructing a road in the disputed area.
