Jakarta [Indonesia], May 30 (NT): Following a three-nation visit to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his first official engagement in Indonesia by laying a wreath at the Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery here on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, the Prime Minister landed in Indonesia. This is his first official visit of Modi to the country.

Worth mentioning here The Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery is located in southern Jakarta.This is a military cemetery containing the graves of well-known Indonesian soldiers and generals (including resistance heroes), who killed during the Second World War.

In addition, it includes graves of Japanese soldiers, along with Indonesian soldiers who killed while fighting for Indonesia's independence in the mid-1940s.

Many well-known leaders who toured Indonesia have visited the monument such as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and South Korean President Moon Jae-in among others.

Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang paid a visit to Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery earlier this month most recently.

Coming to Prime Minister Modi, He will receive an official welcoming ceremony at Istana Merdeka (Presidential Palace). Later the Prime Minister will hold delegation-level talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

"The Government of India attaches high importance to its relations with the ASEAN region and is committed to deepening its relationship with individual ASEAN member states, within the framework of Government's Act East Policy. The visit would enable the Leaders to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest," the MEA statement read. (NT)
