New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist Employees)  workers on receiving the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-Global General's Health Leaders' Award on Monday, saying they are at the forefront of the effort to create a healthy India.

Prime Minister noted on Twitter, "We are ecstatic that the WHO Director-Global General's Health Leaders' Award has been bestowed upon the whole ASHA team. All ASHA employees deserve congratulations. They are at the vanguard of ensuring India's health. Their commitment and perseverance are outstanding."

The WHO Director-Global General's Health Leaders' Award was given to India's one million all-female ASHA workers for their "exceptional" contribution to global health, shown leadership, and commitment to regional health challenges.
ASHA (which means hope in Hindi) is an Indian organisation with over one million female volunteers. Throughout the COVID-19 epidemic, they were recognised for their critical role in connecting the community with the health system and ensuring that persons living in rural poverty had access to primary health care services.

According to WHO, ASHA Employees worked to provide prenatal care and vaccination for children against vaccine-preventable diseases, community health care, hypertension and tuberculosis treatment, and core areas of health promotion for nutrition, sanitation, and healthy living.
