New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 15th BRICS Summit's open plenary session in Johannesburg. During his speech, PM Modi shared several suggestions to enhance cooperation among the BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. His proposals aimed to make their collaboration more comprehensive and effective.
Space Exploration and More
One key idea was the establishment of a BRICS space exploration consortium. PM Modi highlighted the ongoing work on the BRICS satellite constellation. He proposed taking this a step further by creating a consortium dedicated to space exploration. This consortium could focus on space research and weather monitoring, benefiting all member nations.
Another suggestion was to extend cooperation in education, skill development, and technology sectors. PM Modi emphasized the need to prepare societies for the future, making BRICS a forward-looking organization.
Protecting Big Cats and Traditional Medicines
PM Modi also brought up the matter of conserving big cat species. He proposed that BRICS countries, which are home to various big cat species, collaborate under the International Big Cat Alliance to protect these animals.
Furthermore, PM Modi recommended the establishment of a repository for traditional medicines. This would preserve and promote the rich heritage of traditional healing practices.
Support for Global South and Expansion
PM Modi welcomed South Africa's emphasis on countries from the global south during its BRICS presidency. He highlighted India's focus on the same during its G20 presidency and expressed confidence that BRICS partners would support the idea of African Union having a permanent membership in the G20. PM Modi also voiced India's support for the expansion of BRICS. He welcomed the idea of moving forward with expansion based on consensus among the member nations.
