Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Union Budget 2024-25 on July 23 in Parliament. The budget outlines a comprehensive plan focusing on job creation, support for MSMEs, the agricultural sector, startups, and overall economic growth amidst global uncertainties. The Finance Ministry reports that inflation remains low and stable, nearing the 4 percent target, with core inflation (excluding food and fuel) at 3.1 percent. Measures are also being implemented to ensure a steady supply of perishable goods.

Sitharaman unveiled the Prime Minister’s package, which includes five schemes aimed at providing employment, skills, and opportunities for 41 million youth over the next five years, with a central allocation of Rs 2 lakh crore. This year, Rs 1.48 lakh crore has been designated for education, employment, and skill development.

The budget's 'Viksit Bharat' vision highlights nine priorities: improving agricultural productivity and resilience, creating job and skill development opportunities, promoting social justice, boosting manufacturing and services, advancing urban development, ensuring energy security, enhancing infrastructure, supporting innovation and R&D, and implementing next-generation reforms.

To support farmers, the budget includes the release of 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient crop varieties and introduces natural farming to 10 million farmers over the next two years, with support for certification and branding. Additionally, 10,000 bio-input resource centers will be established.

To achieve self-sufficiency in pulses and oilseeds, the government will focus on enhancing production, storage, and marketing of crops such as mustard, groundnut, sesame, soybean, and sunflower. The Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) will also be implemented in agriculture to cover farmers and their lands within three years, with Rs 1.52 lakh crore allocated for agriculture and allied sectors this year.

The government will launch three 'Employment Linked Incentive' schemes as part of the Prime Minister's package, targeting EPFO enrolment, first-time employee recognition, and support for both employees and employers. The plan includes skilling 2 million youth over the next five years, upgrading 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes, and revising the Model Skill Loan Scheme to offer loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh with government-backed guarantees, benefiting 25,000 students annually.
