Pretoria: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today is to attend the BRICS Summit hosted by South Africa. PM Modi arrived here Uganda's capital Kampala. This is the first bilateral tour by an Indian prime minister since 1997. This year theme of this grand summit is 'BRICS in Africa'. He was on Wednesday accorded a warm welcome as he landed in Pretoria on a three-day visit .

"Good evening South Africa! PM Narendra Modi arrives at the Waterkloof air base to a warm welcome. PM will attend the 10th BRICS Summit and related meetings in Johannesburg and several bilateral meetings on the sidelines," talking head for the Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar said in a tweet.

"After successful bilateral visits to Rwanda and Uganda, PM Narendra Modi landed in South Africa to take part in the BRICS Summit," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted.

PM Modi will be present at the 10th edition of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. In this summit the grouping's leaders are likely to deliberate on global hot-spot issues, international peace and security, global governance and trade issues among others. PM Modi is also expected to meet several leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of summit.

Earlier a day, PM Modi had visited Rwanda  where he addressed in the parliament for two days on the first leg of his visit.

BRICS is a alliance of five major emerging economies such as  Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
