Palghar: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra's Palghar district. The ambitious project, estimated to cost around ₹76,000 crores, aims to revolutionize India's maritime sector.

In addition to the port's inauguration, Modi also launched 218 fisheries projects valued at ₹1,560 crores. The Prime Minister described the port project as "very special," emphasizing its significance for India’s development.

According to a government statement, the Vadhvan Port is expected to significantly enhance India's maritime capabilities and boost its global trade profile. The port is projected to become one of the top ten ports worldwide, surpassing the capacity of India's current largest ports by three times. As an all-weather, greenfield deep-draft major port, it will play a pivotal role in transforming maritime trade and positioning India as a key player in the global shipping industry.

After facing several delays, the Vadhvan Port project is now on track and is anticipated to be operational by 2030. The port will feature nine container terminals, multipurpose berths, liquid cargo berths, Ro-Ro berths, and a dedicated Coast Guard berth, establishing it as a major shipping hub.

With a total annual capacity of 298 million metric tonnes (MMT), the Vadhvan Port will serve as a crucial gateway for international trade. Located strategically in the Arabian Sea, it will strengthen trade links with regions including the Far East, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, thus expanding India’s global trade reach.

The port is also set to have a significant economic impact, generating approximately 12 lakh jobs and revitalizing the local economy. This development is expected to drive economic growth and provide new livelihood opportunities for the community.

The government highlighted that the Vadhvan Port is not only a significant maritime project but also a major employment generator, with its anticipated job creation expected to play a crucial role in local and national economic development.
