During the Diwali Milan program at the BJP Headquarters in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the escalating threat posed by deepfakes in contemporary digital media. He underscored the significance of comprehending Artificial Intelligence (AI) due to its potential misuse in disseminating fabricated information or harboring malicious intentions.
In his address to journalists, PM Modi urged the media community to play a pivotal role in educating the public about the detrimental impact of leveraging AI to propagate harmful content, particularly the creation of misleading representations of individuals through deepfakes.
Referencing a recent instance where he was portrayed in a deceptive video singing a Garba song, PM Modi highlighted the widespread presence of such manipulated videos online. He cautioned that the looming threat of deepfakes has become a pressing concern, posing substantial challenges to society.
Deepfakes, deliberately used to disseminate falsehoods or perpetrate malicious actions, possess the capacity to harass, intimidate, and discredit individuals. These technological fabrications not only generate misinformation but also sow confusion regarding crucial societal matters.
The government has taken a firm stance against the production and dissemination of deepfakes, imposing stringent penalties such as a fine of Rs 1 lakh and a potential three-year imprisonment.
Instances of misrepresenting individuals through deepfakes have led to the creation of blackmail materials aimed at falsely incriminating people. The difficulty in verifying these videos and audio recordings intensifies the negative repercussions on an individual's reputation, even after confirmation of their status as a deepfake.
Moreover, PM Modi reiterated the success of the 'Vocal for Local' initiative, acknowledging the widespread support it has garnered. He emphasized that the vision of a fully developed India is not merely rhetoric but has manifested in tangible realities. Local businesses have flourished under this campaign, prompting a call for collective prioritization of indigenous products.
Asserting India's enhanced global standing, PM Modi highlighted the global recognition of the nation's achievements. He was accompanied by Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President JP Nadda at the Diwali Milan program, an event organized by the ruling party at the Bharatiya Janata Party central office in the national capital. Additionally, journalists from the Indian media were invited by BJP party chief JP Nadda to attend the event.
