New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit West Bengal on March 6 amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding Sandeshkhali. It is anticipated that he will meet with individuals on the island who have made allegations of sexual harassment and extortion against leaders affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress.

State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar informed reporters, "Today, we learned that the PM will be visiting the state on March 6 and will address a women's rally at Barasat." Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to visit West Bengal for a two-day trip starting on February 28. A significant number of women in Sandeshkhali have accused Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates of involvement in "land-grabbing and sexual assault" under duress. Shajahan has been evading authorities since a mob, purportedly linked to him, assaulted Enforcement Directorate officials during a raid related to a ration scam on January 5.

Two TMC leaders, Shiba Prasad Hazra, a member of the North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad, and Uttam Sardar, a local party functionary, have been arrested by the police on charges of alleged gangrape and attempted murder. The BJP, Bengal's primary opposition, has accused the Mamata Banerjee government of attempting to cover up the issue. In response, the Trinamool chief has accused the BJP of fomenting unrest on the island.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP), instructing him to submit a report within two weeks regarding the unlawful detention of a journalist from a vernacular news channel by the police in Sandeshkhali.
