New Delhi: Dr V Shanta, a country and world expert in the field of cancer treatment, has died in Chennai today (January 19). He was 94 and had breathing problems, then he was taken to Apollo Hospital in Chennai, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Dr V. Shanta was among the doctors in the country who made cancer treatment accessible to the common man. He did extensive research in the field of cancer. PM Modi has condoled the passing away of Dr V. Shanta. In a tweet, PM Modi wrote, "Dr V Shanta will be remembered for her outstanding efforts to ensure top-quality cancer care. The Cancer Institute at Adyar, Chennai is at the forefront of serving the poor and downtrodden. I recall my visit to the Institute in 2018. Saddened by Dr V Shanta’s demise. Om Shanti."

Expressing grief, Union Finance Minister Dr Nirmala Sitharaman said, "Dr V. Shanta, chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute is no longer there. Dr Shanta was always in the service of the poor and needy. She lived in a room inside the hospital premises, treating cancer patients was her only goal. She was like a saint, no longer among us. Bow down by joining hands. '
