New Delhi: PM Modi inaugurated the 'Friendship Bridge' between India and Bangladesh along with his Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday, saying that political boundaries should not become a physical barrier to trade. PM Modi inaugurated the bridge over river Feni flowing between the Indian border in Tripura and Bangladesh through video conferencing.

During this, PM Modi said that "With the opening of Feni Bridge, Agartala will become the nearest city of India to the International Sea Port. Projects related to the widening of NH-08 and NH-208, which are today inaugurated and laid the foundation, will further strengthen the connectivity of the North East to the port." Sheikh Hasina termed it as a historic moment saying, "The opening of the bridge is a testimony to Bangladesh's commitment to cooperate in strengthening connectivity in the region to our neighboring India, especially to Northeast India."

He went on to say, "Political boundaries should not become a physical barrier to trade. The bridge over the Feni river will also aid trade with Bangladesh with Nepal and Bhutan. In 2010, the CM of Tripura in front of me took the bridge over the Feni river. It was proposed to build. We responded positively to it and since then the government of Bangladesh has given all necessary assistance to India to build the bridge. After 10 years today, the bridge is a reality."
