New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, a founding member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Several Union ministers, including PM Modi, and several BJP leaders paid homage to him on the occasion on Wednesday. PM Modi wrote in his tweet that "Salutations to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his death anniversary. His thoughts and willpower to serve the people will always inspire us, his contribution to the unity of the nation will not be forgotten".

Apart from PM Modi, tributes have also been paid to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee by the BJP. The BJP tweeted from its Twitter handle that "An emotional tribute to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, a great educationist, ardent nationalist thinker and founder of bharatiya jana sangh, synonymous with national unity and integrity, on his sacrifice day". It was from the Bharatiya Jana Sangh that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged later. The JanSangh led by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee opposed the partition of the country.
Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, however, criticized the policies of the Then Congress government, though he was also part of the first Union Cabinet. But, on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, he resigned from the Cabinet. In 1953, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee left for Jammu and Kashmir without a permit, where he was arrested. He died in prison on June 23, 1953.
