New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on an official visit to Brunei from September 3-4, followed by a visit to Singapore from September 4-5, according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. During a weekly media briefing, Jaiswal announced that PM Modi's visit to Brunei comes at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and marks the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the nation. The visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.
Following his visit to Brunei, PM Modi will proceed to Singapore, where he will meet with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Jaiswal mentioned that the official program details for the Singapore visit will be released shortly. On August 26, key Indian ministers including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated in the second India-Singapore Ministerial Dialogue (ISMR). The dialogue focused on cooperation in areas such as digital development, skill enhancement, sustainability, healthcare, connectivity, and advanced manufacturing.
India and Brunei established diplomatic ties on May 10, 1984, with the Indian Mission in Brunei opening on May 18, 1993. The two countries maintain strong relations through shared cultural and traditional links, as well as their membership in international organizations like the United Nations, NAM, Commonwealth, and ASEAN. Brunei has also supported India’s 'Look East' and 'Act East' policies aimed at strengthening cooperation with ASEAN.
