New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, remembering him on the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa, said that he is widely appreciated for his policies of public interest and efforts to strengthen the backward. PM Modi tweeted that, "Remembering Jayalalithaa Ji on her birth anniversary. She is widely admired for her pro-people policies and efforts to empower the downtrodden. She also made noteworthy efforts to empower our Nari Shakti.''

PM Modi further wrote that "She also made memorable efforts to strengthen our women's power." Jayalalitha, who was known as "Amma" in the politics of Tamil Nadu, was born in 1948 in Melurkot village in the Mandya district of present-day Karnataka. She was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu five times. The AIADMK government of Tamil Nadu has recently announced to celebrate Jayalalitha's birth anniversary as 'Girl Child Protection Day'.

The AIADMK created history by winning the second consecutive assembly elections under Jayalalithaa. On December 5, 2016, Jayalalitha said goodbye to this world. The state assembly elections are to be held in April-May this year. BJP has announced to contest elections in alliance with AIADMK.
