New Delhi: The country is celebrating National Sports Day today. On this special occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the countrymen on Sports Day and also praised the outstanding performance of the players. Meanwhile, PM Modi has also paid tribute to hockey magician Major Dhyanchand, tweeting through his official Twitter handle.

PM Modi wrote "Today, on #NationalSportsDay, we pay tributes to Major Dhyan Chand, whose magic with the hockey stick can never be forgotten. This is also a day to laud the outstanding support given by the families, coaches and support staff towards the success of our talented athletes."

In another tweet, PM Modi wrote, "Government of India is making numerous efforts to popularise sports and support sporting talent in India. At the same time, I urge everyone to make sports and fitness exercise a part of their daily routine. There are many benefits to doing so. May everyone be happy and healthy".

"National Sports Day is a day to celebrate the remarkable achievements of all those exemplary sportspersons who have represented India in various sports and made our nation proud. Their tenacity and determination are outstanding", tweeted PM Modi.

Every year on August 29, 'National Sports Day' is celebrated in honour of Major Dhyanchand Singh, a legendary hockey player. Since 2012, the Government of India decided to celebrate National Sports Day on the birthday of Major Dhyanchand. This day is celebrated at the national level. Every year it is organized in Rashtrapati Bhavan. National Sports Awards are presented to sportspersons of the country on this day.
