New Delhi : The Election Commission has asked the Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer to submit a report after the Congress lodged an official complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by holding a "roadshow" in Ahmedabad while the polls were underway. The Commission, while reacting to the allegations of poll code violation, said the issue is currently being examined. The Congress delegation, headed by senior party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, has demanded a 2-3 day campaign-ban on PM Modi for allegedly violating the MCC -- which prohibits electioneering in poll-bound constituencies for a 48-hour period preceding the end of voting.

Singhvi had said after meeting the EC officials"Today after casting his vote, PM took out a long procession and delivered a speech. There has never been such a clear violation of MCC, he is a habitual offender. We appealed to the Election Commission to bar him from campaigning for 48-72 hours," . Modi was in his home state Gujarat today, where voting was held in all 26 Lok Sabha constituencies. He arrived in an open jeep, instead of the bullet-proof vehicle, for casting his vote at a polling booth in Gandhinagar's Ranip.

Throughout the way, he waved at the electorate. After casting his vote, Modi was seen walking outside the polling booth with the BJP candidate and party president Amit Shah. Modi also interacted with the press after casting his vote. Though it was not an appeal in favour of the BJP, critics said his remarks were a reflection of the party's core poll plank of national security. "The weapon of terrorism is IED, the strength of democracy is a voter ID. I can say with certainty that the voter ID is much, much more powerful than an IED," the Prime Minister said.
