PM Modi arrives in Sri Lanka from Maldives to meet President Maithripala Sirisena

London: On the second day of his foreign tour, the prime minister arrived in Sri Lanka from the Maldives. He was greeted by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Colombo airport here. He then arrived at the Saint Anthony Church, where he paid tribute to those who died in the terror attack on the sidelines of Easter in April.

According to the information, as per the default schedule, he met Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena. PM Modi also planted saplings in the Secretariat. With Sri Lankan President Sirisena, he began discussions on terrorism and other international issues. Sri Lanka is also scheduled to meet the leader of opposition Mahindra Rajapaksa and leaders of the Tamil National Alliance.

With this, Modi is the first foreign head of state to arrive in Sri Lanka after the serial bomb blasts on the occasion of Easter earlier in the day. However, it is PM Modi's third visit to Sri Lanka. He had earlier visited Sri Lanka in the years 2015 and 2017. It is understood that 257 people were killed in the horrific terror attack on the occasion of Easter on April 21 last in Sri Lanka, while more than 500 people were injured. 11 Indian citizen were also among the dead. The responsibility for the attack was taken by the Islamic State, while the Sri Lankan government described it as the hand of the local organization.
