New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for winning the Sri Lankan presidential election and said that he hopes to deepen the relationship between the two nations. Rajapaksa has won the presidential election announced in Sri Lanka today. Modi wrote in a tweet that, "Congratulations to you for the victory in the presidential elections. I wish you all the best for strengthening the close and brotherly relations between our two countries and citizens, for peace, prosperity and security in the region. I hope to work together."

In the result released on Sunday for the presidential election in Sri Lanka, former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has won. Rajapaksa's inclination is pointed towards China. Voting took place amid tight security seven months after the deadly terrorist attack in Sri Lanka. The Election Commission has said that after counting about five lakh votes, the main opposition candidate Rajapaksa is ahead with 50.51 % votes, while former residential minister Sajit Premadasa has got 43.56 % votes. Premadasa has accepted his defeat.

Premadasa said, 'It is a privilege for me to honour the decision of the people and congratulate Gotabaya Rajapaksa for being elected as the 7th President of Sri Lanka'. Prior to Premadasa's statement, Rajapaksa's spokesman claimed before the official announcement of the election results that the 70-year-old retired lieutenant colonel had won the election on Saturday.
