BANGALORE: The latest visit to Karnataka by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has helped the state's governing BJP party, which has been under fire for social unrest, a controversy over textbook revisions, and poor infrastructure in Bengaluru, among other things.
The state government, which has entered an election year, was regarded as set back to the state government developments. After launching harsh criticisms of the BJP in Karnataka, the opposition parties Congress and JD (S) appeared to gain momentum.
The BJP was criticised by the opposition for being indecisive on the Mekedatu project. The ruling BJP was clearly in trouble after major Lingayat and Vokkaliga seers voiced their concerns and denounced the textbook revision process.
The Prime Minister's whirlwind tour, his promise to finish infrastructure development projects in Bengaluru in 40 months, his attendance at the 8th International Yoga Day in Mysuru, an unofficial meeting with the local royal family, and his participation in an event hosted by renowned Linagayat seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji have all contributed to the party's ability to recover its damage.
Most importantly, as PM Modi attacked Congress for 40 years of delays in the Suburban Rail Project, the opposition parties Congress and JD (S), which had accused the ruling BJP of corruption, were pushed to the sidelines. The matter had lain ignored for 17 years, PM Modi emphasised. He promised that the project, which had been put off for 40 years, would be finished in 40 months.
