New Delhi: Residents of Gilgit-Baltistan, the northernmost part of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), have been protesting against Pakistan for the past few days, demanding that it be merged with the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. Fed up with inflation, and unemployment, the people of this region are fed up with the biased policies of the Pakistan government and are now protesting to come together with India. People say that for decades, the governments of Pakistan discriminated against them and exploited their territory.

Several videos related to the protest are also going viral on social media, in which people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) can be seen coming out on the streets in large numbers to protest. People are demanding that the Sakardu Kargil Road in the Kargil district of Ladakh be reopened. They demand that the people of Baltistan who live in Ladakh should be allowed to live together with them. These people, who have been protesting for the last several days, have been demanding that the illegal occupation of their land by the Pakistani government be abolished, and the exploitation of natural resources in their area should be stopped. One of their demands is that due to inflation, they are not able to buy all the essential goods including wheat, so the government should provide subsidies to them.

The Pakistan Army has been claiming forcible occupation of the land and resources of the poor people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The issue of land between the Pakistani government and the people in GB has remained for decades, but since 2015 the dispute has increased further. Locals argue that since the area is in PoK, the land belongs to them. At the same time, the administration says that the land which has not been given to anyone belongs to the Government of Pakistan.
