WARSAW: Poland commemorated the 78th anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, with events taking place across the capital city.

The Warsaw Uprising, which lasted for two months and involved 40,000–50,000 insurgents as well as significant deaths, was the largest covert military action in German-occupied Europe. Up to 180,000 people perished along with about 18,000 rebels.

Approximately 500,000 people were forced to leave the city after the rebellion was put down, and Warsaw was nearly completely levelled. The main event was staged in front of the Gloria Victis monument at the Powazki Military Cemetery around 5 p.m. on Monday, when the uprising started.

The insurgents who spearheaded the rebellion were honoured by President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, and other leaders, as well as by people and veterans.

In the meantime, a procession was held in the city's centre and at Castle Square in the Old Town. President Duda laid a wreath earlier in the day at the scene of the atrocity in the Wola neighbourhood, where German soldiers killed thousands of residents as reprisal for the rebellion.

At the Mokotow (district) insurgents' monument in Dreszera Park, flowers were placed.
