PATHANKOT: Punjab's  Pathankot Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang that cheated thousands of people by swapping their ATM cards and withdrawing money from their accounts.

Sr. Superintendent of Police, Pathankot, Mr.Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said police had recovered 66 ATM cards, Rs19000, a swipe machine and SUV car.

He said that Ramesh Kumar, Parveen, and Sikander, all residents of Hisar, Haryana, had been identified as the apprehended suspects. He said that after taking serious note of the cases of ATM card fraud, a special initiative called "Cyber Security" was started, as part of which the district as a whole was kept vigilant to prevent further occurrences.

The gang members used to ride around in four-wheelers in the several states of North India, hunting down ATM booths without security guards. According to the SSP, the apprehended suspects admitted that they had been defrauding people for the last two to three years.

Investigations revealed that Parveen Kumar gave them the swipe machine and agreed to split the stolen money 60:40 with them.

In the first investigation, police found that the suspect had used this swipe machine to make transactions totaling Rs 2.31 lakh and had withdrawn thousands of rupees from ATMs in a single day.

The police said that a detailed investigation will be carried to find out the final figure of frauds committed by them.
