Recently Margherita police busted an illegal oil depot at Powai Centre under Digboi PS on Friday night, seizing 5,000 litres of fuel stored in drums, suspected to be diesel, from the premises of one Dilip Singh and a nearby dhaba run by Bhagwan Shah.

Though the duo oil pilfers escaped under the cover of darkness, a case has been registered vide Digboi PS Case No. 36/ 2022 U/S 379/411 IPC, R/W Sec. 23 (1) (a) Petroleum Act 1934.  SDPO Margherita, ParthaPratim Das, was head of the raid. These illegal activities, according to neighbours, have been going on for a long time, even after the oil thief's father, Bhagwan Shah, and his employees were sentenced to jail time earlier.

After the loading of petroleum products from the IOC Terminal Depot at Golai, a few oil tankers are said to secretly offload oil at some unknown places using special devises fitted to the tankers. Tea gardens located along NH37 used to be the primary consumers of illicit oil.
