Born on April 12, 1935, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Lalji Tandon joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the young age of 12 and reached the post of Ward Councillor to Governor. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP fielded Tandon from the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat. Earlier, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected MP from Lucknow.

Tandon, one of the veteran BJP leaders, was elected councillor for the first time in 1960. After being a councillor twice, he was elected to the Legislative Council for the first time in 1978. Between 1978 and 1996, he was also a member of the Legislative Council twice. Then, for the first time in 1996, he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. After three MLA, he contested and won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 2009. He contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time and retained Vajpayee's legacy by winning by more than 40,000 votes.

Tandon became a minister in the Kalyan Singh-led government in 1991-92. He was an urban development minister in the BJP-BSP coalition government in UP. He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. He was first made governor of Bihar on August 23, 2018. He became the Governor of Madhya Pradesh on July 29, 2019. On July 21, 2020, at the age of 85, he bid farewell to the world.
