Political parties request election commission to postpone assembly election due to COVID-19 & floods

Patna: Political parties in Bihar have been demanding the postponement of assembly elections due this year due to Coronavirus and floods in the state. On Saturday, where the maximum number of corona infected cases were registered in the state, about 5 million (50 lakh) people have been affected by the floods. It has also been learned that some time ago, the Election Commission is seeking suggestions from political parties in Bihar to hold elections in view of the current situation. All the major parties except BJP and ruling JDU are demanding postponement of state assembly elections.

According to the information received, these political parties have sent their replies to the Commission panel as per the scheduled time of 31 July. BJP's ally LJP (LJP) has also told the Election Commission that elections cannot be held in the current challenging situation in the state. Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal are already demanding to cancel the election. BJP and JDU have said that they are ready and they have left the decision on the Election Commission. There is a possibility of elections in Bihar in October-November. Except for BJP and JDU, most political parties have not started election related work.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the maximum wattage is being seen in the coronavirus cases in the state. 3,521 new cases of infection have been registered in Bihar. While 14 patients have lost their lives due to infection.  According to media, Bihar Health Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh said, '3,521 new cases were registered on Saturday. 2,502 samples have been tested on 31 July and 1,019 on 30 July. With this, the number of infected in the state reached 54,508. Out of this, there are 18,722 active cases. Apart from this, the state is also suffering from floods. 14 districts of the state have been hit by floods.
