The Election Commission of India on Thursday said that the By-Polls to Rajya Sabha for six seats namely,  West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and two seats in Tamil Nadu, will be held on October 4,

The Election Commission also announced bypolls for an Assembly Council seat in Bihar on October 4 as sitting MLC Tanveer Akhtar passed away on May 9.

The vacancies were caused by the resignation of Manas Ranjan Bhunia in West Bengal, Biswajit Daimary in Assam, KP Munusamy and R Vaithilingam in Tamil Nadu and Thaawarchand Gehlot in Madhya Pradesh.

The Maharashtra Rajya Sabha was vacated with the passing away of MP Rajeev Satav on May 16 due to COVID-19 during the second wave of the pandemic.

In addition, the Election Commission will hold Rajya Sabha polls for a seat in Puducherry on October 4. The seat would be vacated with the retirement of MP N Gokulakrishnan on October 6. Polls will be held from 9 am to 4 pm for all seats. The elections will be held keeping it mind the Covid-19 protocol strictly. The votes will be reckoned on October 4 at 5 pm.
