In Manipur, the first phase of polling is being held today. A total of 38 assembly seats are going to the polls in the first phase. In such a situation, out of the 38 assembly seats going to polls in the first phase of Assembly elections in Manipur, 29 are in the hilly region. It has 29 assembly seats in Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts. The other nine assembly seats are from Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Farjoul districts. With this, 173 candidates are trying their luck in the first phase of Assembly elections in Manipur in 38 assembly seats.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh performed puja before casting his vote at his residence in Imphal. Out of the 173 candidates whose fate is at stake in the first phase of Manipur elections, 15 are women candidates. The fate of Chief Minister N Biren Singh along with his cabinet colleague Thomgam Biswajit Singh, Assembly Speaker Y Khemchand Singh, Deputy CM Yumnam Joykumar and Congress State President N Lokesh Singh is also to be decided at this stage.
On the other hand, election officials have made elaborate security arrangements for peaceful polling. Local police, as well as paramilitary forces personnel, will be deployed at the polling stations. Polling parties have reached the polling stations and the police in the districts where polling is to be held are on alert. With this, checking has been intensified at the border of the district.
