VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis marked his 87th birthday by meeting with children and families supported by the Vatican's Santa Marta Pediatric Dispensary, just before his regular Angelus on Sunday morning.

Gathering with nearly 200 families at the Paul VI Audience Hall in the Vatican, the Pope received a cake and a bunch of sunflowers while they sang "Happy Birthday." He took this moment to emphasize the significance of preparing for Christmas, highlighting Jesus' arrival among us. "When we recall Jesus's arrival, we remember that he came to be with us," the Pope told the families.

Encouraging the children to ready their hearts to welcome Jesus during this season, he challenged them to reflect on what they might ask of Jesus this Christmas. "Think quietly with your eyes closed: What will I ask Jesus? Have you considered it? Okay."

Wishing everyone a joyful Christmas, he concluded, "I wish each one of you a merry Christmas! Always keep a smile, and may the Lord grant you all your desires."

Since assuming the role of pope in 2013, Pope Francis has made it a tradition to forgo formal celebrations on his birthday. Instead, he chooses to spend time with Rome's impoverished and marginalized communities.

For instance, on his 80th birthday in 2016, he shared breakfast with homeless individuals residing near the Vatican at Casa Santa Marta. In 2017, a pizza party was organized for sick children at the Paul VI Audience Hall. Last year, for his 86th birthday, the Pope recognized three individuals for their charitable endeavors.
