Lisbon: Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced that, beginning of December 1, his country will be in a "state of catastrophe," with strengthened measures in place to prevent additional Covid-19 spread.

Face masks will once again be required in all closed locations, according to a decision made by the Council of Ministers on Thursday. Access to restaurants, hotels, bars and clubs, sporting events, and gyms will all require the Covid-19 digital vaccination certificate. Those who seek to enter retirement homes and health facilities, as well as attend important cultural or sporting events, will be required to provide a negative test, regardless of vaccination status.

"The first measure to take is to enhance the immunisation campaign with the booster dosage," Costa said. "The government has obtained the required amount of vaccine doses in time to be provided to each Portuguese," Costa stated, adding that the country is "prepared to vaccinate eligible youngsters." All passengers travelling into Portugal will be required to take a negative test, with airlines facing fines of up to 20,000 euros ($22,400) per person if they do not comply. Portugal has reported 1,133,241 coronavirus cases and 18,385 deaths since the pandemic began in early 2020.
