From the first week of October, power consumption in the country was recorded with double-digit growth at 25.95 billion units (BU) amid increment in industrial and commercial activities after the relaxation in lockdown by the government due to the pandemic of Corona outbreak. Whereas according to the power ministry data, power consumption grew by 13.65 percent from October 1 to 7 to 25.95 BU, up from 22.83 BU in the same period last year.

As the power consumption in the month of October, last year stood at 97.84 BU. Therefore, the extreme change of one week of data demonstrates that power consumption is inclined to witness year-on-year growth this month. Professionals said power consumption has commenced exhibiting an increase in usage, as commercial and industrial demand improved with the easing of lockdown limitations and is likely to be enhanced in the coming months. The government had imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, to contain the spread of COVID-19. Due to the conditions power consumption had declined in March onwards due to fewer economic activities in the country.

This can be clearly seen from the recent data of usage that the COVID-19 situation affected power consumption for six months in a row from March to August this year. Power consumption on a year-on-year basis declined 8.7 percent in March, 23.2 percent in April, 14.9 percent in May, 10.9 percent in June, 3.7 percent in July, and 1.7 percent in August. The data exhibited that electricity consumption grew by 11.73 percent in February.
