New Delhi: Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, convicted in contempt of court case will submit a fine in the court today. The apex court had sentenced Prashant Bhushan and imposed a fine of Rs 1 on him. At the same time, the court had warned that he would be sentenced to 3 months in jail for not paying the fine.

It may be noted that the Apex Court had convicted Prashant Bhushan of criminal contempt for making objectionable remarks against the current Chief Justice of the apex court, SA Bobde and the old Chief Justice. After which he was fined Rs 1 as punishment. Prashant Bhushan had tweeted a picture with his associate advocate Rajiv Dhawan with a rupee coin. Prashant Bhushan had said that his friend Rajiv Dhawan had given him a rupee coin as a gift which he will soon submit to the apex court as a penalty.

Prashant Bhushan has also filed a writ petition in the apex court. It says that the right to appeal against the sentence in the original criminal contempt case should be heard through a large and separate bench. The petition has been filed through his lawyer Kamini Jaiswal. The petition said that the right to appeal is a fundamental right under the Constitution and is also guaranteed under global law. It will serve as an important protective shield against wrongful convictions and will actually enable the provision of truth as a defence.
