Patna: Political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor has made a bold declaration that his newly-formed political party, Jan Suraaj, will abolish Bihar's liquor ban "within an hour" of taking office. Speaking to the media ahead of the party’s official launch on October 2, Kishor strongly criticized the prohibition policy currently enforced in Bihar, calling it both ineffective and counterproductive. He argued that the ban has led to rampant illegal alcohol deliveries while depriving the state of Rs 20,000 crore in annual excise revenue that could otherwise benefit Bihar's economy.
Kishor also accused politicians and bureaucrats of benefiting from the black market that has emerged as a result of the ban, turning a blind eye to the real issues while exploiting the illegal liquor trade for personal gain. Unlike other political parties that are hesitant to challenge the ban out of fear of alienating women voters—who are often seen as key supporters of prohibition—Kishor emphasized that his party stands for "kabiliyat ki rajniti" (politics of merit) and is not afraid to take a firm stand on controversial issues.
Kishor went on to blame Bihar’s current state of affairs on leaders like Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his predecessor Lalu Prasad, though he noted that Congress and the BJP also share responsibility for the state's problems. He painted a picture of a state plagued by mismanagement and backwardness, which his party aims to address through pragmatic governance.
As he prepares for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, Kishor confirmed that Jan Suraaj would contest all 243 seats, promising a complete overhaul of the political landscape. With a track record of managing election campaigns for prominent leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, and Arvind Kejriwal, Kishor’s entry into Bihar politics with Jan Suraaj is poised to shake up the state's political dynamics.
