President express grief over the deaths of devotees at Mata Vaishno Devi temple stampede

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his condolences on Saturday for the deaths of at least a dozen people in a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan shrine in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir.

"I'm heartbroken to learn that devotees at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan were killed in a stampede. My sincere condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. I wish those who have been injured a swift recovery "President Ram Nath Kovind sent out a tweet.

"A rush at the shrine atop the Trikuta hills early this morning claimed the lives of 12 persons and injured another 13. On New Year's Day, a large crowd of worshippers prompted the stampede. Following the incident, the yatra (pilgrimage) to the holy shrine has been halted "Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Dilbagh Singh stated.

The injured have been sent to a number of hospitals, including Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, where their conditions are described as "severe."  The cave temple, which is located at an elevation of 5,200 feet in the Reasi area, attracts about a million pilgrims each year.

Meanwhile, the LG of Jammu and Kashmir issued an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for those who perished and Rs 2 lakh for those who were injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness over the disaster and promised an ex-gratia payment to the families of those who died.
