Amritsar: President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Banwarilal Purohit as the governor of Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh on Saturday, while also announcing new appointments for governors in various states.

Banwarilal Purohit, aged 83, resigned in February due to personal reasons. In his brief resignation letter to the President, Purohit stated, “Due to personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of Governor and Administrator of UT Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige.” Chandigarh serves as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana. Purohit had assumed the role of Punjab governor in September 2021 after serving a four-year term as the governor of Tamil Nadu.

During his tenure in Punjab, Purohit frequently clashed with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, particularly over the pending approval of various legislations by the Punjab Raj Bhawan. Whenever Governor Purohit raised concerns or sought explanations, the AAP, including the chief minister, cabinet ministers, and official spokespersons, responded strongly, often accusing him of being influenced by the BJP and conspiring against their government.

New Appointments:

Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde has been appointed as the governor of Rajasthan.

Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the governor of Telangana.

Om Prakash Mathur has been appointed as the governor of Sikkim.
