New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has granted approval for the rechristening of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) as the Prime Ministers' Museum. This decision comes as per a notification from the Union cabinet secretariat.
The notification, dated August 30, states, "In accordance with the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, the Second Schedule, under the 'Ministry of Culture (Sanskriti Mantralaya)' section, entry 9, shall now read as follows: 'Prime Ministers Museum and Library,' substituting the earlier 'Nehru Memorial Museum and Library'."
The name alteration was first proposed during a special session of the NMML Society in mid-June. The Society unanimously resolved to adopt the new name, becoming the PMML Society.
The Ministry of Culture subsequently announced its decision to transform the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society into the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library Society. This pivotal decision was reached during a distinctive assembly of the Memorial Museum and Library Society, led President of the Society.
The origins of this initiative trace back to the 162nd meeting of the Executive Council of NMML held in November 2016, where the project received official approval. The fruition of these efforts materialized with the opening of the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, or Prime Ministers' Museum, to the public on April 21 of the previous year.
During the inaugural ceremony, it was noted that despite receiving invitations from the government, no members of the Nehru-Gandhi family were in attendance. Notably, three prominent figures from the Nehru-Gandhi lineage – Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi – had all served as Prime Ministers of the nation.
The Ministry of Culture released a statement elucidating the museum's conceptualization, stating, "The museum seamlessly integrates the past and the present, commencing at the renovated Nehru Museum building, which has now been modernized with state-of-the-art displays highlighting the life and pivotal contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru."
"Spanning across a new edifice, the museum then unfolds the narrative of how successive Prime Ministers adeptly guided the nation through myriad challenges, propelling the country towards comprehensive advancement. It duly acknowledges the contributions of all Prime Ministers, thereby democratically preserving institutional memory," the statement elaborated.
The renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library to the Prime Ministers' Museum marks a noteworthy step in the nation's commemoration of its leadership and history. This decision reflects the significance of honoring the legacies of all Prime Ministers who have guided the nation's destiny through various epochs, encapsulating their enduring influence and contributions.
