KOLKATTA: President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to inaugurate the 'INS Vindhyagiri' today in Kolkata. The event, set to take place on August 17, Thursday, at the premises of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), has been officially confirmed by the Indian Navy.

In addition to this, President Murmu will also oversee the launch of the 'My Bengal, Addiction Free Bengal' Campaign, an initiative aligned with the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' (Addiction-Free India Campaign), orchestrated by Brahma Kumaris at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata.

Key facts about INS Vindhyagiri are as follows:

Named after the Vindhyagiri mountain range in Karnataka, the vessel is the sixth installment in the Project 17A initiative, as reported by PTI.

These naval vessels are a progression from the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class), featuring enhanced stealth capabilities, advanced weaponry and sensors, and upgraded platform management systems.

The moniker 'Vindhyagiri' serves as a fitting tribute to the legacy of its predecessor, the former INS Vindhyagiri, an ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) Frigate of the Leander Class.

During its commendable service spanning almost 31 years, from July 1981 to June 2012, the original Vindhyagiri participated in numerous demanding operations and multinational exercises.

The newly christened Vindhyagiri embodies India's resolute commitment to preserving its illustrious naval heritage while simultaneously progressing toward a future enriched with self-reliant defense capabilities.

Within the scope of the Project 17A endeavor, four ships are being constructed by Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL), and three by GRSE. The initial five ships of the project were launched by MDL and GRSE between 2019 and 2022.

The design of Project 17A ships has been expertly formulated by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau, the pioneering body responsible for all warship design initiatives, as affirmed by the Navy.
