VATICAN CITY: Priests could be permitted to have sex in future, Pope Francis has suggested as he said he was open to reviewing the practice of celibacy.

There is no conflict for a priest to be married, Pope Francis declared in an interview that was released in Argentina media last week. In the Western Church, celibacy is a short-term prescription. It is not eternal in the same way that priestly ordination is permanent.

The Roman Catholic Church did not mandate celibacy until the 11th century. Because clergy without spouses were more likely to leave their money to the church, the change was made in part for financial reasons.

Because of Jesus' example, the Church presently mandates celibacy for priests. But, as the Catholic Church deals with the fallout from child abuse scandals across the globe, there are mounting calls to abandon the norm.
The German Synod recently approved a motion asking the Pope to lift the celibacy requirement for priests.

Francis responded "Yeah, yes" when asked if he would be willing to have the rule reviewed. In actuality, every member of the Eastern Church is wed. or those that desire to. They make a decision there. The option to marry or remain celibate exists before to ordination.

The Eastern Church is a division of Catholicism that accepts the primacy of the Pope while giving room for local customs and liturgy.

The Eastern Church, which permits priests to wed and practises customs like Coptism, has a much lower number of documented abuse incidents than the Western Church.

Francis has changed his stance from when he stated in 2019 that he believed celibacy was a gift to the Church. Now, he is open to evaluating it. I would state that I do not support the idea of optional celibacy.

Exceptions in unusual circumstances: Yet he acknowledged that there might be exceptions for priests in really remote places.

This past weekend, the German Catholic Church endorsed a number of liberalising changes, including approving same-sex unions and allowing women to serve as deacons, or priestly aides. The review was started in 2019 in reaction to the controversy involving clerical abuse.Francis discussed the soaring divorce rate in the interview that was published on Friday in the Argentinian media outlet InfoBae. He claimed that young people were sometimes rushing into marriage.

Sometimes when one  attends a wedding, it feels more like a social gathering than a religious ceremony, he remarked. "Who knows what young people mean when they say forever?"

Pope Francis added: “A very wise lady once told me: ‘You priests are very smart. To be ordained priests you have to spend 6, 7 years in the seminary. On the contrary, to get married, which is for a lifetime, because a priest can leave, on the other hand, for us it is for a lifetime, they give us four meetings."
