New Delhi, India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually attend the 5th BIMSTEC Summit hosted by Sri Lanka on March 30, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

"The Summit Meeting will be hosted by Sri Lanka, the current chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC)," according to a statement released today.

Meetings of BIMSTEC Senior Officials (SOM) will take place on March 28, 2022, followed by meetings of BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers (BMM) on March 29, said MEA.

The challenges posed by the COVID-19 epidemic, as well as the uncertainty that all BIMSTEC members face inside the international system, make the goal of advancing BIMSTEC technological and economic cooperation even more urgent.

This is expected to be the primary focus of Leaders' discussions at the Summit. The group's leaders are also anticipated to talk about the group's basic institutional structures and methods.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organisation that brings together seven countries in the Bay of Bengal region. With five members from South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) and two from South-East Asia, BIMSTEC is a unique link between South and South-East Asia (Myanmar and Thailand).
