Prisons in Uttarakhand are kept many times more prisoners than their capacity. Haldwani jail holds 241 percent more prisoners than capacity. Along with this, there are three jails in Uttarakhand which have prisoners below their capacity. The first Sampurnanand Camp is Sitarganj, the second Chamoli and the third is the Central Jail Sitarganj. On the other hand, RTI activist Nadeemuddin, resident of Kashipur, had sought information from the Headquarters, Inspector General of Prisons regarding the capacity of the jails of Uttarakhand and the prisoners lodged therein. Apart from this, the Public Information Officer / Senior Administrative Officer CS Joshi of the Prison Headquarters by 5 March 2020. Information on the number of detained prisoners is provided relative to the capacity in prisons. According to this, a total of 11 jails in Uttarakhand have a capacity of 3540 prisoners while 5748 prisoners are closed on the date of providing information in it. At the same time there are 2259 Siddhadosh (convicts) and 3489 undertrials. While 61 percent of the total prisoners are under consideration, only 39 percent are court-sentenced prisoners. According to the information, Haldwani is at the forefront in terms of over-capacity prisoners.

With this, Haldwani Jail has a capacity of only 382 prisoners, although there are 1304 prisoners which is 241 percent more. At the second place, 232 prisoners are 227 percent more than the capacity in Almora Jail, while the capacity is 102 prisoners. At the third place, 1305 inmates are 225 per cent of capacity in Dehradun jail, currently only 580 inmates, besides 1320 inmates (157 per cent more) in Haridwar jail, 492 inmates in Roorkee jail (202 per cent more), 144 prisoners (203 percent more) are kept in Nainital. There are 168 prisoners (112 percent more) in Tehri jail, 156 (104 percent more) prisoners in Pauri.
