Private School Fee Reduction: See Rules Orissa High Court

In the matter connected to charging of fees by private educational institutions, the Orissa High Court recently had ordered the School & Mass Education Department of the State to convene a meeting between all the stakeholders to arrive at an amicable settlement.

Closing curtain to the long wait over the contentious issue of reduction of fees by private schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, as demanded by parents’ bodies across the State, the Orissa High Court today made it clear that the reductions would be made as per the recommendations of a high power committee that had been constituted for the purpose.

The committee had been constituted by the High Court to settle the issue after the State government sought not to interfere in the administrative decisions of private schools by maintaining that they were beyond the purview of government control.

Deciding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the parents’ body, the court, however, paved the way for objection to the fee slab decided by the high power committee, stating it can further be challenged through a writ petition if warranted. – This is a developing story, which will be updated more.
