NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi met protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar today, April 28, 2023, and expressed solidarity with them. Priyanka, who is scheduled to take part in a series of election campaign events in Karnataka later in the day, arrived Jantar Mantar in the morning and interacted with the wrestlers.
The general secretary of the Congress was spotted listening to renowned female wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik. She is slated to participate in a number of election campaign activities in Karnataka later in the day. Priyanka Gandhi had earlier this week raised solidarity for the protesting wrestlers and slammed the government, asking whether it wants to save the culprits in the matter.
She had also reportedly alleged that the cries of athletes who uphold the honour of the nation were being disregarded and claimed that such voices are silenced "when the arrogance of a party and its leaders" is sky high,
First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed after Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha's Supreme Court panel heard from Delhi Police's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that a case would be lodged on Friday. While the first FIR relates to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under POCSO Act, the second was related to outraging modesty.
The nation's top wrestlers, who have been demanding action against Singh at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since Sunday, celebrated Mehta's submission as "the first step towards victory" but declared they will continue their campaign. They urged the removal of the BJP MP from all of his current posts.
