HYDERABAD: On the lines of a biogas plant set up in the boinpalli vegetable market, a joint venture between the Ministry of Biotechnology and the Agricultural Marketing Department, the vegetable waste production units will be set up in Hyderabad in two more vegetable mandis. Dr Gangagni reported that the work of making biogas from vegetable waste in the Red Vegetable Market has begun and plant ready biogas is being replaced by LPG in the Mandi canteen. The Red Vegetable Market produces 500 kg of garbage daily and produces 12 to 16 kg of biogas.

At the same time, two biogas digestors of 5-5 tons capacity were set up in the Boinpalli vegetable market in Hyderabad. When vegetable waste is produced here, garbage from other nearby mandis is brought to the Boinpalli vegetable market.

Waste is produced by methane gas. Three generators run with methane gas and the electricity generated from it burns 100 street lights of Mandi and the lights of the administrative building. Additionally, the water motor also works with biogas electric energy. 30 kg of biogas is also supplied from the plant for cooking in the Kitchen of Mandi.

So far 32,000 units of electricity and 600 kg of biogas have been produced from Boinapalli Biogas Plant. Dr. Sandeep Karajnagi, a plant engineer of Ahuja Engineering Company, which founded the Boinpalli Biogas Plant, said that the mandi is saving rs 1.5 million every month in paying the electricity bill. The cost of LPG has been reduced by Rs 30,000 due to the use of biogas in the kitchen. It is estimated that Rs 22 lakh will be saved annually. Fertilizers can be used as fertilizer in fields from the biogas plant.
